His bizarre but true life story encompasses world-changing discoveries, life-threatening enterprises, imprisonment, a shipwreck, accidental explosions, fighting, politics, extensive travel, mingling with high society, and the founding of Siemens - now the largest engineering company in Europe.

His memoirs caused a stir when they were first published in 1893. This copy has been slightly edited for clarity but otherwise remains true to the original translation by W.C.Coupland.
