People tend to be much better than we give them credit for. I highly recommend @rcbregman's book "Humankind" on this topic.

I’m so honoured that What We Owe The Future is Blackwell’s non-fiction book of the year! I’m a huge admirer of the previous two books (The Right to Sex and Humankind), and it’s surreal to be in such company.
