I see people interested in "primitive" forms of 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲/𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀/𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 across animal groups that might not have a stronger neuro background (say, philosophers). Highly recommend The Evolution of the Sensitive Soul by Ginsburg and Jablonka
