Didn't need to think more than a few seconds... THE TERROR by Dan Simmons. I was *not* expecting it to grab me immediately and not let go. Surprisingly riveting. (Have tried twice to watch the recent tv series based on it, but lordy it's somehow dull & slogging in that form.)
