Re books, I thought "Human Compatible" by Stuart Russell was good. Check out @stateofaireport for annual summaries of progress in various areas of AI (research, industry etc)

The books 'Human compatible' by Stuart Russell, 'The alignment problem' by @brianchristian, and 'Superintelligence' by Nick Bostrom are excellent. Probably best read in that order (from least technical to most technical).
