This is why I'm not convinced by the new species of bionic duckweed that says that electric bikes will mean cities don't need public transport. 
Just a few years ago it was self-driving cars that were the dominant bionic duckweed.

The North's railways remain largely unelectrified. Bionic duckweed won. What an expensive mistake. Other countries in Europe took better decisions than the UK's experts and centralised politicians could manage. And that is one reason why they're richer and have better healthcare.
This seems to be the new "I am a very smart expert" angle on why Leeds should remain the largest city in Europe with no mass transit. I, of course, was the only one in the online meeting with an eBike in Leeds. But who cares eh? You eBike to the train in Wimbledon now. Great.

Excellent thread, not least for reminding us that "bionic duckweed" should be a universally understood term of art in innovation policy. If electric trains/trams had only just been invented, we'd be rushing to implement this great novel decarbonisation technology.
