This film is actually the middle section of a longer film, Mathematics by Computer Animation, which was made of three sections of computer graphics films produced at Bell Labs in the early 1960s.

The film's three parts are:

* Geometry: The Circumcircle
* Conformal Mapping: The Joukowski Transform
* Differential Equations: excerpted from Frank Sinden's Force, Mass & Motion

The film was programmed by Bell Labs mathematician Samuel P. Morgan; lettered by E.E. Zajac and student R.H. Hudgin. Morgan had one of the longest careers of any at Bell Labs โ€” he joined the staff in 1947 and worked there until his retirement in 1998. During that time Morgan headed the Mathematical Physics Department and was the Director of the Computing Science Research Center. His work there covered a huge range of subjects, as demonstrated by this diverse list of Morgan's publications from 1945-1997.

The Conformal Mapping is related, of course, to another early computer graphics film from Bell Labs, one that maps the Joukowski Airfoils. The Conformal Mapping equations in the film shown here don't show specifically an airfoil transform, but instead demonstrate various basic mapping transforms.

The full video is even better. Just 3 1/2 minutes of beautiful teaching from the 1960s at AT&T.
