There can sometimes be a reverence for collectors and a belief that their time is so valuable that no artist should dare intrude on it

As if they can't be bothered by the humans behind the art they are buying

Personally yes, I am pretty busy with multi-billion dollars deals. But for most collectors this is far from the truth

They're avg people who made some money in crypto and fell in love with cryptoart. And not inspite of the relationships, but because of them

So how exactly does one interact with collectors?

Well, like a normal human being

I could end the thread there but let's get a little more specific. Starting with Dm's

1. The single most obvious time for an artist to reach out is after someone buys your art. It can even be just a simple thanks

But from all the 1 of 1 art I've bought, maybe 25% of artists have reached out after. And for editions that number drops to probably 5%

2. The second most obvious time is if someone bids on your auction but loses

They are probably the clearest path to a future sale you can get, but you'd be surprised by how few people take advantage of this

3. DM shilling is only shilling when there is no consent.

Nobody wants unsolicited links and sales pitches. But everyone wants an artist they admire to personally reach out about their work. There is a big difference

So how do you start a relationship with collectors when they show no interest in your work?

4. Be genuine. It can be in a public posts or a dm. Compliment their gallery (specifics), answer a question thoughtfully, just be genuine and don't focus on selling yourself

5. Ignore collectors

This may seem counter intuitive but seeking out collectors can also be a waste of time too. Let them come to you when they're ready

6. Build relationships with other artists

Contrary to what it can seem like, artists are the true tastemakers. Collectors want to buy the art that their favorite artists like

And other artists can amplify your work in a powerful way and genuine way

So wtf does it all mean?

The most successful artists are the ones who build up the communities around them. Minting art will only take you so far. So make kick-ass art and make genuine investments in other artists and collectors and you might be rewarded
