Terraforms is the brainchild of @mathcastles, an anonymous duo @xaltgeist and @0x113d.
In its essence, Terraforms is a contract on the ethereum blockchain that attempts to define and represent a blueprint for what an invisible digital structure could look like.

The description from the creators simplifies this further as 'Onchain land art from a dynamically generated, onchain 3D world’.
Artistically it explores the essence of an immortalised but everchanging hyper structure.
Sounds confusing - lets break it down further...

The first form that terraforms can be viewed in is their 2D state. Every single one is made using purely ASCII characters that change colour or fade away to give the appearance of a glitchy moving landscape.
But thats not the full picture...

There are 3 modes in which these landscapes, also known as ‘plots’, can appear, either ‘terrain’, ‘terraform’ or ‘daydream’.

The first mode, Terrain, is the most common. This mode is the one therefore what people are most visually aware of and picture when they think terraforms.

‘Terraform’ and Daydream’ modes however look very different - some completely bare while others resemble artworks from Punks to Pepes and ‘The Scream’.
The reason - Mathcastles want owners to interact with their NFTs and constantly evolve the project over time.

By putting a plot into Daydream mode, it allows you to draw upon it to create your very own artworks.
Once a holder is satisfied with their artwork, they can then mint it, to finally turn the plot into the ‘Terraform’ that the founders have always intended.

If the user wants to change the look of Terraform, they simply can by switching it back to the clean slate of Daydream mode (reversible transaction)
However, if people wish to turn back to their origional Terrain state, this is not possible (irreversible).

The metadata within the contract also allows for them to be visualised in 3D. Looking at the complete renders of these also shows that these 3D plots move, appearing like a real landscape that is always evolving from the natural forces of erosion.

This is where terraforms becomes even more of a unique generative art project.
Each plot of land is linked with their own co-ordinates as part of a megastructure known as the ‘Hyper Castle’. This is the invisible world in which the team have built into the contract.

As you can already tell there are many layers of detail to uncover with Terraforms and as you explore the project further you start to appreciate the mastery beauty of the art and the impressive technicalities within the contract.
