As the midterm elections approach—and the pundits continue to say the Republicans have a good shot of claiming the House—I cannot stop thinking about Democratic messaging. This past weekend, I was at the Chicago Humanities Festival for an event during which I interviewed Anand Giridharadas about his thought-provoking new book, The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts. Minds, and Democracy. In a way, his volume and my American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy are bookends.
