Duke of Abruzzi did some pretty rad exploring. I also love the book “River of Doubt” about post-presidency Teddy Roosevelt exploring a previously undocumented Brazilian river that now bears his name. Unbelievable determination to survive.

Alexander Mackenzie would be right up there. Beat Lewis & Clark across the continent by 12 years. The Magnificent Adventures of Alexander Mackenzie by Noel Gerson is a good overview of his exploits.

Can’t believe no one has recommended The Invention of Nature! Alexander von Humboldt. Darwin’s and Jules Verne’s inspiration, worldwide celebrity, audiences with Jefferson, Madison and Napoleon. Literally invented the idea of nature and interconnected ecosystems. Brilliant.

This was the first book I thought of, loved it. Capt Cook “discovered” some of the most inaccessible places on earth, crazy to try to put that in context for his time and tech. And a fun read!
