There was a giant book they gave us in Art school called “Gardener’s Art through the ages” first edition (1926). Not sure where you can get it, I have seen more recent editions on Amazon.

Probably considered out of date and/or politically incorrect now, but Kenneth Clarke’s tv series Civilization was a wonderful way to learn about Western art. I recommend it.
