German Lutheran pastor, theologian, and anti-Nazi dissident. Key founding member of the Confessing Church. Writings on Christianity's role in the secular world are widely influential, including the book "The Cost of Discipleship." Known for staunch resistance to the Nazi dictatorship and opposition to Hitler's euthanasia program and persecution of Jews. Imprisoned at Tegel Prison and later transferred to Flossenbürg concentration camp.
