Received a B.S. in mathematical sciences from Stanford University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University as an assistant professor. Later, co-authored an optimized Quicksort algorithm with Doug McIlroy at Bell Laboratories.
