Gary, I would recommend reading up on this (I did not until recently). Buybacks accelerated a lot after 1982, but they were neither illegal nor that scarce. In fact, the great Charley Ellis (of The Loser's Game fame) co-authored a book about them-in 1971.

Sad to hear of EO Wilson’s death. But he lived a remarkably productive life and challenged and inspired many. I named “The Consilient Observer” after his book, Consilience. I recently read Richard Rhodes’s biography of him, Scientist, which I recommend.
