Born in Tomaszów Mazowiecki to a family of German-Polish heritage. Studied law and economics at the University of Kraków and went on to work at the Ministry of Labor in Warsaw. Emigrated to England in 1934 and later to the United States in 1937. Became a professor at the University of Chicago and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1943.
