Graduated from Newton High School and Harvard University with bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in government. Dissertation on the role of military advice in decisions to resort to force became his first book, Soldiers, Statesmen, and Cold War Crises. Awarded Sumner Prize for best dissertation in international relations. Served as teaching fellow and lecturer at Harvard.
