Several people have mentioned this book but no one mentions Nikki Sixx's "The Heroin Diaries", which is equally good if not better, and certainly more harrowing.

It would be hard to beat Mark Lewisohn's Tune In, the first of a projected 3 volume series on The Beatles. It's great. Before I read it I thought, do I really need 700 pages on The Beatles pre-Ed Sullivan? And the answer was, yes. Yes I did.
