Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1917. Graduate of St. Andrew's School and Princeton University. Served in the Marine Corps in World War II, specifically in the Guadalcanal Campaign. Commissioned as a battalion intelligence officer. Lectured and wrote about the fighting qualities of Japanese soldiers at the Marine Corps Staff and Command School.
