People ask me all the time if I am "pro-Israel" because I am a Jew who has lived in Israel, and my answer is that being "pro-Israel" or being "pro-Palestine" or being a "Zionist" does not properly capture the nuance of thought most people do or shoul

It's a wonderful read. Well worth your time picking up. When I am done with this Viking series I'd love to have @CatJarman on the HHA podcast for a sort of post-mortem conversation. There will certainly be stuff that would benefit from an expert's perspective!

Places like the RAND corporation and other nuclear think tanks have studied this problem for decades. Whether their conclusions are correct is debatable. @fmkaplan s book “The Wizards of Armageddon” is a great read if you like this stuff (and if you haven’t already read it).

After the war, some families of men who had disappeared at Verdun wanted to place a memorial on the battlefield as near as possible to the place he was last seen alive. Not only are some of them big but they are in areas of terrible fighting.

Check out his other fantastic book “The Wizards of Armageddon” which details the attempts to get great intelligences together to try to formulate how to deal with these unbelievably powerful weapons. @fmkaplan

Good thread here on the war situation.

Thoughts on the current state of the war and where things might be heading. About 2 weeks ago I suggested that Russian forces have ~3 weeks before combat effectiveness becomes increasingly exhausted. I think that's generally been right, but we're not

About last week... We promised an update in due course... Well, we found something rather spectacular... It all started with a lot of concrete and little hope of an entry, until the earth began to shift... What followed was beyond expectations...

Don't be modest! We had you because you wrote a great book, about a great, important subject and we knew the listeners would like it. We were honored to have you. Wish we had done a better job on the audio quality...but the discussion was wonderful. Thank you for taking the time!

This is a great thread. Finally explains the back story that goes with this famous artifact.

Thanks to social media this is one of the most famous battlefield relics from Napoleonic era. It captures the moment of a man's death. It is not a joke or a Monty Python sketch about a scratch. It might not seem so funny if we knew more about the man

Boxing is the only sport that likely bucks this trend. The reasons why are explained in "The Arc of Boxing" by Mike Silver (and the reasons are fascinating).Silver has lots of boxing experts and boxers giving oral info in the book. Worth a read if you like these sort of questions.
