I can't recommend Anniversaries enough and so few Americans will ever read it even though it's about us in a big way. It'll absorb your entire season and - not even kidding - change the way you perceive time, people, and New York City.

Since Pynchon is already here (heartily seconded), I'll add A Place of Greater Safety, Anniversaries (newer, two-volume translation) or A Brief History of Seven Killings. The first for a deep thriller that belies its weight, the second if you really want the book to rewrite you.
