Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow and its sequel are also great; I was put off by the description as "Jesuits in space" but learning that the author had converted to Judaism from Christianity very much checked out.

Chris Moriarty's Spin trilogy! I was shocked to learn that the author was not in fact a computer professional, she had such a refreshingly clear understanding of networks and systems in a way that contributed to the story.
