Y'all should read this. All you have to do is read their writings. You have these people in the we need to to mass suicides stages of these cults, and what they get is billions, megaphones, "letters" that get ridiculous amounts of positive media attention.

This paper from 2010, is one of the best papers I have read that describes how choices of metrics that don't sound like a big deal (like ratios, or subtractions), or distance units, encode value judgements, giving a bunch of case studies.
