Oh and 'Ways of Seeing' by John Berger. It's not a history but brilliant insights on understanding aspects of art.

This 4 part BBC documentary is among the most influential works of art criticism ever produced and was deemed fit for public consumption 50 years ago. It sure seems like today’s platforms (and their ultra opaque terms of service) are moving society backwards.
