Former assistant professor of economics at New York University and Princeton University. Became a professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University and served as department chairman from 2015 to 2019.

Author and member of the Advisory Committee of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the Lincoln Forum. Authored several books on Lincoln, including "Lincoln at Peoria: The Turning Point," "Lincoln by Littles," and "Lincoln & Churchill: Statesmen at War." Also, wrote extensively on monetary policy, including "True Gold Standard," "Money, Gold, and History," and co-authored "Money and the Coming World Order" and "The Case for Gold."
