You asked about novels, but I must say that I—though a novel person—have for decades now been getting a lot out of a 1986 ELH article by Debra Fried “Repetition, Refrain, and Epitaph” (but maybe my brain just keeps running in the same old tracks!? 🤷🏻‍♀️ )
