"Evolution and Tinkering" by Francois Jacob is a masterpiece worth reading and re-reading. I was reminded of Jacob's article yesterday when Simon Levin (shown below) displayed a quote from it about predictability, complexity, and emergence.

Today, after telling my chaos class about the late Mitchell Feigenbaum, I stumbled across this affectionate tribute to him by @stephen_wolfram. It contains lots of wonderful (and often funny) inside stories about Mitchell's life and work. [link] cc @chaaosbook

Today I started my class on the butterfly effect in the Lorenz equations by having everyone watch this video by @veritasium. It's so good! Very motivating to the students, and it allowed me to focus more on the nitty-gritty math.

An interesting new paper in @PNASNexus, "Complex Systems of Secrecy: The Offshore Networks of Oligarchs", uses data from leaked documents to examine the network structure of wealth managers and the oligarchs they serve. [link] Press:

Students can learn the basics very efficiently from Farlow (great pedagogy, plus it's an inexpensive Dover book)

The full video is even better. Just 3 1/2 minutes of beautiful teaching from the 1960s at AT&T.
