David Deutsch provides a more comprehensible and less complex explanation on the topics of the fundamentals of quantum theory, computation, epistemology, philosophy, democracy, morality, memetics, psychology, and personhood compared to standart texts university lectures and popular YouTubers.
Nice piece. Deutsch got fundamentally "what sets humans apart from animals" and Hofstadter's notions (like those of others) while true, emerge from something deeper: a capacity to create explanatory knowledge. This is Deutsch's criterion (perhaps worth referring to as such).
Great episode Quibble with @jockowillink at 19 min mark: not all “learning” is like “brainwashing”. Broadly, the former requires a human to deploy their critical faculties to construct knowledge. The latter requires those same faculties to be *disabled*.
